Sometimes I look at Mike and wonder, why would we ever get married? He’s the person I love the most on earth, the one person I feel ‘alone’ with, the one I want to devote my time and attention to. But when you get married you show each other your ugliest aspects – your emotions, your worst illnesses, and the weakest and most vulnerable aspects of yourself. Your own death, potentially. Yet perhaps this is the paradox we all must face before we find true happiness.

I considered how beyuls foster the resolution of these paradoxes. Beyuls are wreathed by the Himalayas and house exotic flora and fauna. They represent the most ideal, protected environments on earth. Sounds pretty amazing, yet life for their people is filled with toil, minimal healthcare and education, snowstorms, avalanches, leeches, and rats. It’s impossible to ignore the grandma with the eye infection that took her sight, or the child burning with fever from a gut parasite, while having some blissful spiritual experience. In order to find that perfect moment of unity, maybe the beyul is more like a merging point rather than a destination. Somewhere where you can accept the good and the bad, and then transcend. I think for Mike and me, it’s no different.

Tsum comes from the Tibetan word ‘Tsombo’, meaning vivid. I felt I must open my eyes to the ‘vivid’ and look at reality. And that meant reconciling with my dad’s death and my own accompanying fears.
